A Day in My Life
I wake up every morning around 6:40 am, but only on school days. I get ready for school and leave my house around 7:15 am. On my way to school, I pass by Sierra Park and Farm Dale elementary schools. I also see El Sereno Middle School and kids walking to school. I arrive at Wilson about 7:20 am. I go early to my first period because if you get there early, you get to go on any website and it’s fun. Class starts at 8:00 am and Mr. R teaches us Life Skills. He really doesn’t teach though because he just tells us to write about ourselves and that gets boring. He also talks a lot about things that really don’t matter. Mostly everyone turns on their computers, so they don’t get bored. It’s even more stupid that he tells us to do things that won’t help us in anything, like bubble maps. I mean, I know how to do bubble maps; it’s just that I don’t like them and don’t see any point to them. When my classes are boring, it takes away my learning because I’m not focused on the teacher’s lecture.
When I go to PE for second I get dressed and wait with my friend until Mr. D takes roll. He knows us, so we don’t wait that long for him to take roll. When he’s done, we stretch so we don’t pull a muscle and he tells us what we are going to do for the day. Usually we play football, but on Wednesdays, he makes us run four laps around the field. Most of the time we learn how to play a sport or we play a game. At nutrition, I hang out with my friends in front of the three hundred building. My friends are Shawnie, Dina, Lydia, Anna, Carla, and Thalia.
After the bell rings, I go to my third period class with Ms. M who teaches Inter-Coordinated Science. This class is so boring too because we do the same thing everyday. After third the bell rings and I go to my fourth period class. I have Mr. S. and he teaches us Algebra One. This class is okay, but everyone always talks because Mr. S doesn’t have control of the class. Everyone thinks they can get by, but they can’t. When I don’t get work from my math class it’s a relief because I don’t like math, but not getting any work also doesn’t help learn so it’s not good.
The article I read called “Subtractive Schooling” by Angela Valenzuela relates to me because in most of my classes, the teachers lecture too much and you end up not learning anything. For example, the article says, “He doesn’t make the class interesting and nobody wants to learn what he or she is saying” (pg 2). The students don’t like that the teacher isn’t making class interesting. This is important because it’s not fun when you sit in a classroom and just listen; you don’t learn anything. You don’t get anything done.
....continued
Then the bell rings and I go to lunch with my friends. We hang out at our usual place and just talk. It’s really fun until the bell rings. Then I have to go to my English class with Ms. X. We never stop working, even if we do something fun, we have to write about what we did. It gets really boring because we have that class for two hours. When my English teacher doesn’t give us a break during passing period it sucks because it doesn’t pump us up for the next hour. Then we aren’t awake for class. I think I have gotten better though in English because I have improved in my writing. I can write longer papers now than what I used to before.
After school I go home I catch the DASH. When I think about my day, a song by Pink Floyd called “Not another Brick in the Wall” relates to me because, the song says:
We don’t need any education
We don’t need any thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers! Leave them kids alone!!
All in all it’s just another brick in the wall
All in all it’s you’re just another brick in the wall
This song is about kids who don’t want teachers to control their thoughts. For example, “No dark sarcasm in the classroom” means that the teacher doesn’t want the kids to be messing around in the classroom. Sarcasm always happens in classrooms and teacher always wants to control the students by making them stop. I think students just want their teachers to see them as individuals. What I mean by individuals is that we (students) don’t just want to be another other “brick in the wall” because that just makes it seem like no one cares about you.
The DASH drops me off about one block from my house so I get home really early. This means I have more time to relax before my brother gets home. He gets really annoying because he never lets me do anything. Most of the time I fight with my brother because he really bugs me and never leaves me alone. Well, later on I take a shower and by that time my mom gets home. She hardly cooks so we make our own meals. I watch TV for a long time and then go to sleep around ten sometimes if I’m tired.
At school I think I’m challenged to work hard because every day I learn something new even though I might not understand everything. At school I am learning to be a stronger student. I have learned how to write narratives like this one and that’s helped me a lot. I want people to know that you should never feel left out because then you’ll never get to the top and succeed. We have to keep our hopes up and not let anything bring us down.
